Just in case there isn’t enough news about Angelina Jolie in the world, how about this controversial painting that depicts her as the Virgin Mary, holding a buncha kids, hovering over Walmart? Artist, Kate Kretz, explains on her blog that the painting addresses:
The celebrity worship cycle…because of her [Jolie’s] unavoidable presence in the media, the worldwide anticipation of her child, her ‘unattainable’ beauty and the good that she is doing in the world through her example, which adds another layer to the already complicated questions surrounding her status.
*Barf* Right, Angelina is Mother Theresa. Angelina is the Children’s Crusader. Angelina is a saint. A saint who had sex with other women, cut herself and used her blood to write words on t-shirts, denounced her father for one mistake (which she committed herself). A saint who stole someone’s husband. I think this artist is just trying to bring attention to her art work because what else could explain her choosing Angelina Jolie as her subject, of all the people in the world? Angelina isn’t the only person giving to the poor now is she? If Angelina were just another “normal” woman devoted to charity work, would the artist have picked her? Of course not. The artist would’ve have picked a normal woman if she had truly cared about someone “doing good in the world”.
Trusty Wikipedia has a whole lotta history on Angelina - the “saint” - highlighting these freak facts about her:
- She had admitted she’s bisexual, fell in love and had an ongoing affair with her Foxfire co-star, Jenny Shimizu.
- She was unsuccessful with modeling so she started cutting herself because it was “therepeutic” to her. She collected knives and always had things lying around.
- Dropped out of acting classes and dreamed of becoming a funeral director.
- She had her groom’s name painted in her blood on the back of a white shirt which she wore to her wedding to Johny Lee Miller.
- Of course, the infamous blood vials of her and Billy Bob which they wore around their necks.
- She denounced her father, John Voight for cheating on her mother; but seriously, she had long hooked up with Brad Pitt while he was still married to Jennifer Aniston. So, whatever.
So why am I bringing this up? It’s ridiculously odd that all of a sudden she’s the Mother of all Mother Theresa’s in the world. Just because she’s giving her money to every poor soul in third-world countries, that makes her a saint somehow? Giving money to the poor isn’t a hard thing to do if you have a ton of it. And having to work only a few months out of a whole entire year making a movie and millions of dollars pretty much gives you all this free time to travel the world. Big deal. Unlike the rest of us busting our chops 8-10 hours a day, 5 days a week, all year long just to make a fraction of her kind of income. Like she’s not getting anything out of it? Tax write-offs, for one; but mainly personal satisfaction so she can feel good about herself, so she can make up for all the f*cked up sh*t she’s done in her past - all the while maintaining to be a real angel in the public eye. People don’t change overnight. She is FAR from “Virgin Mary.” That’s the bottom line. If the artist can’t even see that, then she might as well just be painting pigs roasting over a fire pit. I can’t wait to hear what religious people have to say about this sacrilegious painting. Some already said this is a mockery to Virgin Mary and mockery to their religion. LOL.

In general, the artist agrees with you, and your points about AJ only make the artist’s message stronger. The whole point of the piece is not to lionize the actress, but to criticize a culture that deifies celebrities, especially when the celebrities’ lives are so far from being good role models.
This is horrible!! She is absoloutly no role model or even close to being of a high ststus as the Virgin Mary. Shame on the artist who did this, I hope the management takes it off, QUICK
well, she is prettier than virgin mary thats for sure
Please re-read that first comment. I would add that not only is the artist criticizing “a culture that deifies celebrities,” but she’s definitely making “lite” of kitschy religious art. The style and the subject matter are a good match, and the piece is well-done. Even if Angelina deserved to be “worshipped,” is that kind of worship good for anyone?
