Till death do us part? Well, that’s not always the case.
An Indian woman, despairing over her lover’s accidental death when he fell down a well soon after their engagement, insisted on ceremonially marrying his corpse just minutes before the cremation. Wedding attendees sat the corpse up by a fire, the traditional centre of Hindu wedding ceremonies, and chanted some marriage prayers before cremating the body, police said. “The girl refused to give away the body of her lover for the cremation till she tied the knot with him,” Kapadia said. The bride’s parents opposed the marriage but later attended the wedding ceremony and gave their 22-year-old daughter Tulsi Devipujak clothes and utensils as gifts, according to the Hindu tradition.
Holy cow. Talk about spooky. How the hell do you fall down a well? Had too much to drink? Anyway, this is probably the most bizarre story I’ve ever heard. Sad - and spooky. This is just too weird for words. How can you imagine marrying a dead person and automatically becoming a widow? No honeymoon. No kids. Nothing. She’s basically married to a ghost. Maybe she can do what Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze, and Whoopi Goldberd did in Ghost.

It’s actually not that uncommon in Asian culture for people to “marry” the dead. From their point of view, especially if they believe in reincarnation, dying young creates a degree of “unfinished business” here on earth. By marrying the dead, they are helping to provide the lost soul a proper conclusion to their earth-bound life (and many times - unlike the story above - it is done to help the parents overcome their grief).
